ALL MATERIALS, A PORTRAIT MODEL & TUTORING WILL BE PROVIDED, including easels, boards, oil paints, brushes, palettes, dippers, rags, knives etc., as well as an ample supply of drawing materials and papers. All you will need to bring is a sketchbook and a canvas or board if you prefer to paint on a conventional surface.
EACH CLASS costs £66, including everything you need to draw and paint, as above.
The class will start with slides at 2.30pm. We’ll end at 5pm.
Whether you are a practising or aspiring portrait painter, or a beginner, come along to the London Sketch Club on Saturday afternoons and take this opportunity of a regular weekly sitting with a portrait sitter.
I am a very experienced portrait painter and I am very much looking forward to teaching you how to make complete and coherent paintings, that are not just ‘pictures with something wrong with the mouth’ as Sargent nearly said.
Drawing will be the ever-present tool that solves so many issues:
Arshile Gorky: ‘Drawing is the basis of art. A bad painter cannot draw. But one who draws well can always paint.’
I could have called these classes FACE PAINTING, as we will be concentrating on the particular opportunities and challenges which someone else’s face provides as a subject. Degas said sternly that we should ‘never paint the eyes on the same day’. To be discussed ….
Using the same model each week, when at all possible, this class will enable you to paint a new portrait each week, or to continue at your preferred pace on a longer-term painting.
Either way, we will use painters of people, old masters and new masters alike, as stimuli to help you find your own strengths as a painter of people, in an informed way. Each week, we will focus on a particular aspect, skill or technical discovery from an artist or movement so that you will build up a collection of skills.
You can buy three or more classes at £50 each, by emailing me at firstname.lastname@example.org and arranging to pay by Cheque or BACS.
