JONATHAN ELLIS – FIGURING IT OUT

THIS INTERPRETATIVE DAY INVOLVED A MORNING WORKING DIRECTLY FROM MARIANA, THE MODEL, USING DRAWING AS OUR MEANS OF INVESTIGATION. THE AFTERNOON’S PAINTING EXERCISES WERE TRANSPOSED FROM THE MORNING’S STUDIES RATHER THAN FROM THE MODEL, ALLOWING A CREATIVE APPROACH TO DEVELOP. WE USED NICOLAS DE STAEL as a guide.

De Stael looked hard at Cezanne, Matisse and Picasso and we looked hard at him – watching how his stated aim of being

l’entre deux – between abstraction and figurative work.

Turning some slides of his charcoal drawings on their side, we were convinced they were landscapes, such was his discipline and vigour. He was rigorous in not getting involved with any human detail whatsoever when drawing from the model and energetic and inventive. Conversely, some of his landscapes were so flatly abstracted that they could have been figure studies.

To synthesise his layered approach, using impasto paint, we determined to paint over collage.

Preliminary 5 minute drawing exercises, painted directly from Mariana, our model.

  1. very small (on a postcard) – Thick grey and black promarkers
  2. very small (on a postcard) – Just black marker, going too far, promised white markers, then not given them …
  3. very small (on a postcard – Black and White pro markers
  4. very small (on a postcard) – grey line, then black shapes
  5. very large (up to A1) – made a black charcoal column on the page, then worked into it in with an eraser

15 minutes:

6.  very large (up to A1) –  charcoal line, then black shapes
