London Sketch Club 14 September 2016: Cezanne Apples

Cezanne’s Apples, in particular his open watercolours, provided us with a way of exploring tone then colour in layers.

First, we drew through white chalk on black paper with an eraser, to establish tone, then worked with white acrylic paint onto a new black page, this time applying light with paint, rather than shadow with the eraser:

 

 

There was a diversion as we considered how remarkable it is for one fruit to contain both red and green:

Then, drawing freely and layering up primary colours on tracing paper, using oil paint, produced these sumptuous paintings:

Lastly an oil painting proper, using the previous exercise, with its accidents and layers, as our subject:
