Annie and the Wire Brush

Spent an afternoon in Lavender Hill, ostensibly to investigate painting on metal with Annie, although the focus soon turned to creating paint textures with a wire brush & sandpaper.

My intention was that the necessary layers of gesso and acrylic paint should be organised – white gesso under brights under neutral greys – and then exploited, before being controlled and exposed by linear and tonal resolution (thinking of Barbara Rae, Vanessa Gardiner, Piper and Ben Nicholson).

What this simplistic proposal required was Annie’s lack of any fear coupled with her great sensibility for mark and colour and she created these (and a couple of others that my camera refuses to release):
