THESE TAUGHT CLASSES ARE FOR ARTISTS OF ALL ABILITIES, BUT BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL AS PLACES ARE LIMITED, ESPECIALLY AS WE ARE OFTEN WORKING AROUND THE LIFE MODEL. THIS IS A WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY TO WORK ALL DAY FOLLOWING A THEMATIC APPROACH AND YOU CAN EITHER BOOK THE WHOLE SEASON IN ADVANCE (FROM JANUARY TO APRIL) OR SIGN UP FOR ANY DAY YOU LIKE.
THE PAINTING CLASSES WILL BE TAUGHT USING A HARD-WON PHILOSOPHY ABOUT TEACHING ART:
“I teach a language, not just how to copy – copying is certainly a skill, but each artist needs to do something rich and rhythmic with their ability. My approach, using led exercises, ensures that both the teacher and the students are always on the edge of discovering something new. We are all in it together, for the first time. Art, like language, has a structure, a pattern, a syntax and the common strands in visual experience can be taught and learnt. It is up to the individual to use that language with the infinite variety of individual expression. This is a liberating approach: we all might not have the skills or inspiration of a great master, but everyone who really wants to draw, can begin to make a connection between their inner and outer worlds and communicate through art.”
Every class starts with a short slideshow to introduce that day’s theme. There are three distinct approaches present in these exciting, intense and structured thematic classes, allowing artists to explore analytical, interpretative and expressive approaches:
EACH ANALYTICAL DAY WILL COMPRISE A WHOLE DAY WORKING IN FRONT OF THE MODEL, WITH DRAWING EXERCISES FOLLOWED BY PAINTING, USUALLY WITH A SUGGESTED PALETTE AND AGREED ELEMENTS TO FOCUS ON.

EACH INTERPRETATIVE DAY WILL INVOLVE A MORNING WORKING DIRECTLY FROM THE MODEL IN A THEMATIC SETTING, USUALLY USING DRAWING AS OUR MEANS OF INVESTIGATION. THE AFTERNOON’S PAINTING EXERCISES WILL BE TRANSPOSED FROM THE MORNING’S STUDIES RATHER THAN FROM THE MODEL, ALLOWING A CREATIVE APPROACH TO DEVELOP.

EACH EXPRESSIVE DAY WILL BE PAINTING DIRECTLY FROM THE MODEL OR OTHER SUBJECTS FROM START TO FINISH, USING SPECIFIC ARTISTS’ WORK AS CATALYSTS.
Matisse: A new painting should be a unique thing …. the artist should call forth all of her energy, sincerity and the greatest possible modesty in order to push aside the old clichés that come so readily to hand
ALL MATERIALS, & TUTORING WILL BE PROVIDED, including easels, boards, oil paints, brushes, palettes, dippers, rags, knives etc., as well as an ample supply of drawing materials and papers. All you will need to bring is a sketchbook and a canvas or board if you prefer to paint on a particular surface. I will have prepared painting boards suitable for each day’s focus.
Bottle of water, cafetiere coffee, tea (green too), sweet snacks and fruit are provided. Bring your own lunch, or follow me to a nearby pub …
As ever, we will use painters of people, old masters and new masters alike, as stimuli to help you find your own strengths as a painter, in an informed way. Each week, we will focus on a particular aspect, skill or technical discovery from an artist or movement so that you will build up a collection of skills.
