male model – early days

The life class I attended on Monday was one of those strange ones where one of the little warm-up studies in the sketchbook seems to offer more to paint about than the longer drawings … here As I’m just starting to move from line to tone as an underpainting process, here are the first stages of this process. 1. A drawn study, during which I couldn’t keep up with the poses, so there are three in here somewhere – triple vision 2. A tonal underpainting, still over a black ground, in slightly truncated form on a bought canvas 3. A much larger underpainting on board, the ‘right’ shape. I intend to paint with energy and daring over these simple forms (when they’re dry …)
