A Herefordshire family portrait

They are a lovely family, warm and so at ease with each other. I was asked to draw them in their home and straight away wanted to make something informal and at the same time intense and well-planned and, of course, drawn from life. A drawing that would be a family portrait about liveliness and life, in addition to being about likenesses.

I tried to make something energetic and open-ended, perhaps just a second or two after (or before) that wonderful Degas stillness of the Bellelli family ….

Generous with their time, we started on Monday afternoon and finished today, Wednesday at lunchtime.

I really hope they like it.
