11 February 2013: dear London, on working in the studio … day 29

After  weekend off (beginning of half-term) during which I showed the studio to family for the first time and of course found the experience salutory – really keen to sort out the paintings now …

Monday was a gallery day:

Schwitters at Tate Britain. Highlights for me were his wonderful painted sculptures and some sketchbook page laid out in the last gallery. Of course I emerged thinking about painting from collage, perhaps using my Brick Lane photographs for composition. Paper on paper has a lovely ring to itThen to Christies showroom in King Street, which was very powerful. Gallery upon gallery of unexpected delights – Richter, Auerbach, Kieffer, Albers and Tapies are just a few of the high quality works on show til Wednesday. Rather a relief to be essentially uncurated, although well exhibited of course.Kris Martin at White Cube has cast honeycombs in bronze and what looks like plaster. Lovely textures.

RA life class in the evening, ready to be filleted for painting tomorrow …
