26 January 2013: dear London, on working in the studio … day 17

Saturday: a gallery trail on my bike, seeing Flowers at 80, with some jewels on show from her established artists and then to Kate McGarry showing Matt Bryans and then setting off down Brick Lane to look for local colour, literally. I need to find a palette for St Hilda’s but also for selected areas of the studio drawing which are beginning to look like possible avenues of development …

Here is a gallery of Brick Lane photographs I took today. I began by looking for catalysts for abstraction, composition and textural, and  pointed the iPhone at walls and other surfaces, never people or recognisable subjects which I know must be discovered by drawing. As I looked two elements became important. Paint itself became the subject of the photographs and, in addition, the hours I have spent panelling the sitting room at home in the last few months provided me with a subject which framed the painted surfaces:
